Abstract

The management of urethral stricture disease has been a challenging for the urologists. Preoperative characteristics of the stricture such as location, length and degree of spongiofibrosis are useful in selecting the appropriate treatment.
The simplicity, precision and availability of sonography with absence of radiation exposure, make sonourethrography a valuable tool in the armamentarium of the urologists. This modality can provide extra guidance for treatment planning that can not be obtained with RUG.
In this study, it is clearly obvious that there are correlations between stricture length, location and periurethral spongiofibrosis (seen on pre operative sonourethrography) and subsequent recurrence of strictures following EVU, so these factors can affect the outcome of EVU.
EVU has advantages of ease, simplicity, speed and short convalescence. It is no longer considered as a definitive treatment for urethral stricture disease due to sobering long-term success rate as low as 20%, EVU should be considered after meticulous evaluation of the characteristics of the urethral stricture, to prevent high recurrent rate, and to prevent increasing in the degree of spongiofibrosis after using it.
