Abstract Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is explicity characterized as a ’’multifactorial’’ optic neuropathy with a characteristic acquired loss of optic nerve fibers , developing in the presence of open anterior chamber angle and manifesting characteristic visual field abnormalities,in the absence of other known causes of the disease The ultimate goal of glaucoma treatment is to delay , stop and sometimes reverse the damage to the optic nerve and ganglion cell layer caused by the glaucomatous process. The only way to accomplish this at present is by reducing intraocular pressure below the level that will cause continuous damage to the optic nerve. |
