Abstract

Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children. It accounts about 30% of all childhood cancer. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is responsible for about 70% to 75% of the childhood leukemias which is common between the ages of 2 and 6 years and is higher in boys than in girls. As a result of chemotherapy, the child often experiences many side effects over varying periods of time. The nurse should have an adequate understanding of the disease and its treatment with emphasis on the use of chemotherapeutic agents, its mechanism of action and side effects to provide adequate instructions and teaching to the children and their families. Therefore, the aims of this study were to:
A. Assess knowledge and practices provided by mothers for their leukemic children.
B. Determine the effect of maternal educational program on the care of their leukemic children.
The study was conducted at Hematology- Oncology Unit at Zagazig University Hospital (Mobarak Hospital).
A convenient sample of fifty mothers who had children aging 2-15 years and suffering from leukemia and started chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy compromised the sample.
