Abstract

Neonatal sepsis is considered as one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in neonates.
Skin plays an important role in prevention of neonatal sepsis. Skin flora act as a barrier against potential pathogens by helping to maintain the normal acid-base balance. So skin invasion by pathogens occurs when this balance interrupted. For this reason optimal skin care is considered as one of the most important preventive measures for prevention of neonatal sepsis.
The present study aims at studying the skin flora changes with bathing of preterm infants in NICU and its relation to early and late onset sepsis.
This study was conducted on 60 preterm neonates with gestational age below 37 weeks.
They were classified into three groups as regard the type of bath:
Group I: This group had no bath at all and included 27 preterm neonates (10 male and 17 female).
Group II: This group bathed with water only and included 15 preterm neonates (7 male and 8 female).
Group III: This group bathed with water and mild antiseptic soap and included 18 preterm neonates (10 male and 8 female).
