Abstract The objective” of this study IS to develop a method for designing an overlay thickness for Egyptian roads based on the deflection measurements and the Asphalt Institute’ AI’ overlay design method. deflection measurements The were conducted usmg Benkelman Beam’ BB’ for six selected roads located at Suez Canal district and managed by the Roads and Bridges Authority ’RBA ’ .. In addition other measurements were conducted which included: - Traffic, - Temperature, - Pavement condition index ’pcr ” and - Pavement structure number’ SN ’. A computer program was developed to calculate the required overlay thickness. A group of design curves were developed using the computer program to get the required overlay thickness. Finally the relationship between deflection and each of PCI & SN were studied and tested. The results indicated that there IS no relation between pavement deflection measured by BB and Pavement Condition Index ’PCI’, and there IS a relation between pavement deflection and Pavement structure number’ SN ’. The overlay thickness calculated by the Asphalt Institute and the developed method was compared. |
