Abstract

The experimental work carried out in this research is based on production of rubberized concrete by recycling the scrap tires in the concrete as a replacement of fine aggregate with different percentages. Rubberized concrete is a technique used by adding new desired materials to the concrete, this type of concrete consumed a large quantity of scrap tires, which are burned and thick black smoke arises and causes serious health hazards and environmental problems.
Several trial mixes were carried out in order to obtain suitable mix for the rubberized concrete to meet suitable workability, strength and other properties. The rubber used in this research was ground waste tire rubber, which used as a replacement of fine aggregate (sand) (GWTR/TFA) by percentages (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%). In this study three different values of cement content 300, 400 and 500 kg/m3 were studied. Three treated materials (PVA, S.F, and NaOH) were used to treating the rubber particles surface, which used for making the rubberized concrete and rubberized mortar mixes. The results indicated that rubberized concrete could be used as a construction material for structural elements (as beams, slabs…etc) up to certain rubber percent. More than this percent, rubberized concrete can be used in some applications as non-structural elements, which need low strength, more ductile and energy absorption such as crash barrier, road constructions, nailing concrete and interior constructions.
