Abstract

The sensitivity of two bacterial strains, Bacillus licheniformis and Pseudomonas oleovorans was tested for their ability to remove and bioaccumulate some heavy metals like cobalt or cesium the media. The two strains were able to remove successfully cobalt or cesium from the media.
Cobalt biosorption by Bacillus licheniformis was investigated in concentrations ranging from 5 to 300 mg/l. As the concentration increased, both the uptake and growth decreased, maximum uptake was found to be at 5 mg/l cobalt. While pH 7 being the optimum hydrogen ion concentration for maximum cobalt uptake (85.10%) by Bacillus licheniformis, pH 8 was optimum for maximum growth (0.534). The optimum incubation temperature for cobalt uptake and growth of Bacillus licheniformis was found to be at 400C. Maximum uptake had been recorded with 20% inoculum size after 72 hours for the same organism and the same element.
Increasing the concentrations of cesium till 400 mg/l induced a significant increase in percentage of uptake by Bacillus licheniformis.
