Abstract Aim of the work Aimed at classification and the prevalence of the different causes, the best methods for diagnosis and the different modalities in treatment of acute thromboembolic limb ischemia in MUH, Jan through Dec 2000. Conclusion In our study, the main line of treatment was Fogarty catheter embolectomy which is a save, simple and effective method. It was done in 30 cases and yielded 80% limb salvage, 6.6% limb salvage with minor disability, 6.6% amputation and 6.6% mortality. No operative management using high dose heparin and thrombolytic therapy was done in only few cases (5 cases) and need study in larger groups for better evaluation. Amputation was done in 3 out of 5 patients presented with neglected limb ischemia and the remaining 2 patients died while waiting till line of demarcation. Long term anticoagulation with oral agents in vital to decrease the incidence of recurrent emboli. Lastly, for our non vascular physicians, please put your fingers on distal pulsations in any patient complaining of sudden pain in his extremities, you may save his life and/ or limb. |
