Abstract

Aim of the work
In the present study we aime to evaluate the diagnosis, treatment, outcome, and prognosis after surgical management of solid abdominal malignancies in childhood.
Conclusion
- Wilms’ tumour and intestinal lymphoma are the most common solid abdominal tumours in children between 1 and 14 years old.
- Careful clinical and radiological diagnosis before surgery lead to well deciding of the surgical treatment and hence better outcome after surgery.
- Early stages of solid abdominal tumours in childhood can be treated well with surgical resection of the tumour.
- Radical resection of the respectable tumours is mandatory to give complete cure of the patient, to avoid postoperative complications and to avoid harmful side effects of long-term postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
- A great deal of work remains to be done in improving protocols and achieving a better quality of survival for these children. Further long-term studies on large number of patients are recommended.
