Abstract Aim of the work To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ondansetron versus droperidol and metoclopramide in a placebo- controlled study for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing day case gynecological laparoscopy under general anesthesia. Conclusion We conclude that ondansetron was the safest and most effective of the antiemetic drugs evaluated in this study for the prevention of PONV in laparoscopic gynecologic procedures. Ondansetron and droperidol were superior to metoclopramide and placebo in the prevention of PONV but the benefit of droperidol has to be weighted sedation and occurrence of extra pyramidal manifestations. Metoclopramide was the least effective antiemetic drug and was associated with hypotension and sedation in this study. We recommend that the use of a single i.v. dose of 4mg ondansetron prei operatively in combination with 10mg i.v. metoclopramide given at the end of the surgery for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. |
