Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of CT colonography in detection of colorectal neoplasms, polyps, strictures, inflammatory lesions & diverticulae.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were referred for CT colonography & conventional colonoscopy between December 2002 and May 2006 for evaluation of colorectal symptoms (including melena, stools with positive hemoccult test results, iron deficiency anemia, personal or family history of colonic neoplasms & polyps) for colorectal cancers & other lesions screening. Sixty patients were recruited for study “42 males; 18 females” their age ranges from 17-75 years.
RESULTS: The results showed that the sensitivity of polyps detection increases remarkably with advancement of polyp size. The sensitivity in detection of small”< 5mm” polyp was 83% while in medium sized ”6-9”polyps was 100% & for large polyps”>10mm” was 100 %. Virtual colonoscopy showed 100% sensitivity for detection of colonic masses & strictures.
CONCLUSION: Virtual colonoscopy is a simple, reliable, cheaper, highly acceptable and sensitive examination. It requires no sedation and has no significant perforation risk. It can detect the exact anatomical site of the colonic lesion. It allows 3D viewing of the colon in a forward and reverse direction. It can assess the colon proximal to occlusive lesion even impassable by conventional colonoscopy. It allows complete abdominal & pelvic assessment of the extra-colonic organs.
