Abstract

Aim of the work
To evaluate the effect of sevoflurane versus halothane on the level of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in previously anesthetized patients.
Conclusion
It is safely to say that serum level of ICAM-1 is higher in patient anesthetized with halothane than with sevoflurane, and the circulating level of ICAM-1 may convey the degree of leucocyte adhesion and migration, and hence reflect the severity of inflammatory activity. Therefore, may be of clinical importance as a sensitive diagnostic or prognostic indicator of hepatic function.
Recommendations
1- The future approaches should be directed towards the new adhesion molecule ICAM-1.
2- The patient should be investigated carefully for serum level of ICAM-1 especially when he has been exposed to general anesthesia.
3- Sevoflurane is much better than halothane in anesthesia for patients with hepatic impairment or patients have been exposed to halothane anesthesia.
