Abstract

The marine environment has proven to be an excellent source for new prototype chemical structures, pharmaceuticals, and lead drug compounds. In particular, the sponges and ascidians have been especially rewarding organisms, leading to the isolation of several compounds that are currently in different phases of clinical trials.
The Egyptian Red Sea represents one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the world.
The uniqueness and richness of this environment renders it an excellent source of novel chemical compounds with strong biomedical potential. To-date the Red Sea marine life in Egypt has received only little attention in areas of biomedical research.
