Abstract Interested in the chemical and biological studies of condensed bicyclic systems comprising the 1,3,4— oxadiazole and pyrimidine nuclei, a study was initiated to synthesize new derivatives of 7—Hydroxy— 5H— l,3,4—oxa— [3,2_a] pyrimidines to be screened for antimicrobial activity and to explore their effect upon the activity of alkaline phosphatase enzyme. The thesis comprises the following :— Introduction : In this section, the different biological properties associated with the various types of pyrimidines, 1,3,4—oxadiazoles and 1,3,4—oxadiazolopyri— midines were surveyed. Discussion : In this section, the reactions utilized for the synthesis of the different intermediates and the final compounds are discussed with reference to the knowledge available in the literature. The structures assigned to the new compounds were substantiated by microanalysis, infrared, 1H—NMR and mass spectral data of representative members of the series. |
