Abstract

Since the conventional energy sources are nonrenewable, they will one day, be exhausted. Even new sources of energy such as nuclear power plants, which today account for only few percent of the energy resources, use fuels which are available in limited quantities. For all these reasons, the world needs new unlimited sources of energy.
With the rapid development of modern technology during recent years, scientists are trying to find and improve the unconventional sources of energy to the benefit of mankind. In this thesis an attempt has been made to evaluate the prospects of the utilization of hybrid system of photovoltaic and wind energy along the northwestern coast of Egypt.
Preliminary survey of the insolation and wind speed distribution has been done. Also a good study for the north coast of the Mediterranean sea has showed that, it is a promising solar and windy region. Alexandria has been chosen as a testing site for this work.
In order to produce a reliable hybrid system, it is very essential to have an accurate data for the chosen site. A computer controlled system was implemented to measure the insolation using a photovoltaic panel and the wind speed using an anemometer.
The half hour data recording lasted for a full year (from 1 October 1991 to 30 September 1992). This data was analyzed to optimize the permissible system design for a per unit kilowatt.
A new technique was introduced for the proper slzang of hybrid systems to determine the ratings of the windmills and the area of the photovoltaic panels in order to deliver the required power. This technique is based on the minimization of the mean square difference between the required power and the power delivered by the hybrid system based on the actual measured data
A method for testing the performance of the system was presented.
This method is mainly based on the comparison between the power delivered by each of the photovoltaic panel and the windmill on hourly, daily and monthly basis. This method can be used to determine the reliability of the system and the amount of storage facility needed to improve the system reliability .
