Abstract

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of chlamydial and gonococcal infections among third trimester pregnant women, to find out the association between various social and obstetric factors and the prevalence of those 2 types of infections among pregnant women, and to propose a nursing model for the management of the infected cases. One hundred and fifty, third trimester pregnant women were analyzed cross sectionally, using urine samples on cultures for gonorrhea and 6 –8 days developing chick embryos for chlamydia. Methods of data collection were interviewing sheet, observation sheet for general examination of the woman, local perineal inspection, and laboratory findings ( urine test ), in addition to the knowledge assessment sheet. According to the results of this study, both age over 35 years old, premature rupture of membranes, male infection, history of STDs and use of contraceptive pills were significantly associated with chlamydial and gonococcal infections (P<0.05). Diabetes mellitus was strongly associated with those 2 types of infections (P>0.01), while there were highly statistically significant differences in the infected group as regards the signs and symptoms of infections. Overall, poor antenatal care and poor knowledge related to chlamydia and gonorrhea and their prevention were positively associated with the risk of acquiring chlamydial and gonococcal infections. This study concluded that, many social and obstetric risk factors significantly contribute in the occurrence of chlamydial and gonococcal infections in Sharkia population, and gives new information about the prevalence of chlamydial and gonococcal infections in Zagazig University Hospital.
