Abstract The earthquake design of dams is a particulary important problem in view of the disastrous is necessary to evaluate the safety of existing dams during future earthquakes. The present study deals with the effect of spatial correlation on stresses in a long dam due to random lateral ground motion.the objective study is to find out wtether the level of stresses which the lack of spatial correlation of ground motion may produce can be significant and attempt to find the influence of various important parameters on these stresses.the seismic excitation is represented by the horizontal components of earthquake ground motion acting along the dam length.these motions are assumed as stationary random and partially correlated processes characterized by spectrum and cross spectrum.the oil structure interaction wasaccounted for and the contact problem between the dam and the foundation beneath it was considered as a mixed boundary value problem. The study may comlemeny earlier studied made in the same field by novak and suen 1987 and el-hifnawy 1989. |
