Abstract The presented thesis is concerned with the behaviour of a pneumatic gauging system with particular attention to the actual role of the gauged gap between the tested surface and the gauging nozzle,an aspect of the system governing factors which has never been considered before.A recessed nozzle is also intoduced as another governing factor for the performance of the pneumatic gauging system with the objective of improving its operating characteristics and hence its applications. Recognition of the actual role of the gauged gap led to the development and formulation of theoretical model for the operating characteristics curves of both the conventional and the introduced reccessed nozzle pneumatic gauging systems. It was shown in the presented work that as a consequence the theoretical operating characteristics curves, for the conventional nozzle pneumatic gauging system are in much closer agreement with the experimental work carried out in the presented study, than those of pervious studies. It has been also demonstrated that the introduction of the recessed nozzle improved the characteristics of the pneumatic gauging system, regarding both the measuring sensitivity and the initial sensing gap. |
