Abstract
The study was conducted on 40 patients with liver cirrhosis .
We used psychometric tests(number connection and line tracing testes), electro encephalogram , and clinical signs of encephalopathy to group our study patients
Group I: included (10) patients with liver cirrhosis without hepatic encephalopathy
Group II : included(12) patients with preclinical hepatic encephalopathy
Group III : included(18) patients with clinical hepatic encephalopathy
Then all patients subjected to abdominal ultrasonography to evaluate the liver size and architecture , spleen size and presence and degree of ascites. Also patients were subjected to laboratory investigations including complete blood count , liver function tests, and blood urea nitrogen and plasma creatinine
We used the child pugh classification to evaluate the degree of liver compensation
Then all patients underwent to duplex Doppler examination to evaluate portal vein diameter, portal flow velocity, and portal flow volume, direction of flow of blood in portal vein and para umbilical vein patency and diameter
