Abstract

This is a study about housing degra&tion. It is a study pertaining to the pattern in which housing depreciate and residential districts turn to slums. In Egypt, urban housing is the most serious multi- dimensional problem challenges the nation. Housing in Egypt is delivered through “govcrnmental” sector, formal private sector, and informal private sector. All these forms of housing dclivcrv arc heavily influenced by numerous factors that contribute to the excessive degradation of the ovcrall environmental tandards. Further, there is ongoing process of housing dilapidation and residential cnvirOniflcIIt degradation taking place in old urban centers and inner cities. Enhancing the factual knowledge of this degradation process will lead to imply, recommend, and consequently, design appropriate policies to arrest housing decline and upgrade the existing housing conditions to acceptable standards. Alexandria was specifically chosen to be the area under research for many reasons. First, csidcs its global fame, the city has attained a unique architectural asset that displays its flourishing and rwngrading stages. The Turkish and the Occidental styles are both distinguishably demonstratedin the i city urban form. It is indeed a bitterness to observe those unique styles and urban order decay and the being deprived its identity. Second, As someone who grew up in, and still has vety strong feeling to tc city. I feel much more like a participant in the contest than a self-indulgent spectator. The city is my mc. where I have experienced, and exercised as well, visual and spiritual contact throughout living d study. I am not alone in believing that the prospects of degradation takeover are likely in current cuhIlstances. Therefore, more sincere efforts have to be devoted to prevent this from happening. id. all the attention now is directed to trace and analyze the problems of informal housing, the severe rlagc in housing supply and how to cope with the rampant urban growth. Unfortunately, the problem sidcntia1 degradation has not been paid the adequate attention from either researchers or policy tivcs. Thus, new researches have to be channeled towards this direction. This study is consisted of 7 chapters. An introduction to the research is presented in chapter one 1C theoretical and practical elements of major themes pertinent to the study are discussed and csearch’s problem, scope and significance are addressed hroughout this chapter. Chapter vs the literature that deals with the research problem. Chapter three illustrates the analysis of.
