Abstract

Across the previous years, regeneration terms have differed. These interventions all aimed to solve the problems of deprivation and decline in rural areas. Rural renewal, rural reconstruction, rural development and redevelopment, rural improvement, rural rehabilitation, rural preservation, rural conservation, and rural (re)strengthening are some of the transformation interventions which emerged within the last two centuries. Among them, especially rural development, rural redevelopment and rural regeneration have become the most common rural transformation interventions over the last three decades.
The term regeneration was also defined by many, but in 2000, Roberts and Skyes defined regeneration as “comprehensive and integrated visions and action which leads to the resolution of rural problems and which seeks to bring about a lasting improvement in the economic, physical, social and environmental conditions of an area that has been subject to change.” This is the definition that is most commonly used today in addressing regeneration.
Regeneration started out as a governmental based approach, instilled by governments to provide communities with services like infrastructure projects in areas that were deprived, however this approach soon changed when the representatives realized that the communities need to be involved in the schemes set to ensure the achievement of proper regeneration.
Thus regeneration strategies started involving more sectors like the private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community development agencies (CDAs).
During that time, regeneration also started taking on broader scopes, regeneration began focusing on all the aspects of the thriving and well-being of a community, not only infrastructure and services. It began taking a closer look at health, socio-economic levels, education, awareness and the most recent addition environment and sustainability.
Surveys were conducted and data analyzed to reach the optimum community regeneration program available, with a complete engulfing look at all the factors contributing to the alleviation of the socio, economic and health aspects of the individuals of a determined place.
In 1985, a new concept emerged to ensure the health and sustainability of cities, the “Healthy Cities” approach, focusing on the main issue of health being much more medical care. People are healthy when they live in nurturing environments and are involved in the life of their community, when they live in Healthy Cities. While the term refers to cities, the principles apply to all different types of communities including rural ones.
This concept offered a new view of the interactions that affect people’s lives. It took into consideration the influence of the context - the place, surroundings, relationships and opportunities on the individual. It also began to highlight the interconnections among what seem to be diverse elements and problems in society. And finally, it suggested that the solutions to both community and quality of life problems may also be interwoven
Whether the primary reason people participate involves children, environmental concerns, homelessness, safety, education or other issues, the approach is always the same: a collaboration is organized among citizens and people from business, government and other sectors of society who recognize their interconnection can be used to impact the well-being of the entire community.
