Abstract
1.1 Decline of Railway Freight Service
A considerable portion of inter-city transport of freight is carried by Egyptian Railways.
The ’Lack of proper operation of trains and the pr-- esent condition of yards iray be considered among the cau¬ses of many traffic problems which led to the inability of the network to operate as efficiently as it should be.
This has led to the present situation which caused the diversion of freight to road transportation as being the quicker mode -_respite of its relative high cost.
This situation will be illustrated by showing some statistical results dealing with a comparison between rail and road transport.The study was done at Al-Azhar Univers¬ity and yielded the following results (Ref 8):
- The share of road transport of the total tonnage of the types of goods included in the study has been increasing year .
