Abstract

This work includes a presentation of the different types of composite materials together with the various manufacturing techniques used in ’industry. The mechanical properties of the composite materials with the several factors affecting them such as the type of matrix, filament, fabrication techniques ••• etc. are introduced. Several experimental procedures are summarized and presented together with theoretical analyses of numerous investigators. A micromechanic$ study of composite material be¬havior is made. Two approaches are used, namely; mechanics of materials and elasticity.
Tests are carried out on both natural fibers such as flax, wool and palm fibers. Also synthetic fibers such as nylon 6, polyester, viscose rayon and fiberglass are used. Load-elongation characteristics for the various fibers are presented. Tests are also carried out on composite materials with the different natural or syn¬thetic fibers. Stress-strain diagrams are plotted and
the results tabulated. Surprisingly, the behavior of the polymer is nearly elastic and sufficiently ductile. The study offers some details for fabricating the composite materials with its behavior under tensile
Comparison of experimental and theoretical results made with the hope of predicting the mechanical of the composite material when the corres¬~onding values of the constituent materials are known. There is some difference between expectation and rea¬lization. However, the results presented here will help the designer in better understanding how composite mater-
ials function.
