Abstract In this thesis, an investigation on the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams subjected to combined tension and flexure is presented. The object was to investigate data useful for establishing a method for analysis of reinforced concrete beams subjected to these forces. An experimental test programme including ten simply supported reinforced concrete beams was-performed. All the beams were tested under the action of two concentrated transverse load and an axial tensile br>force. They were applied simultaneously in increments up to failure. A proposed theoritical analysis method based on theories found in the literature is presented. This method of analysis was checked against the test results obtained herein and these found (1,2,3) in the literature and remarkable agreement was found between the theoritical method of analysis and the available test data. The behaviour of elements under combined action of tensile force br>and flexure only did not differ significantly from beams in flexure. The experimental results was in agreement with the analysis made and based on linear strain distribution. When eccentricities were near or less than ~ the strain distribution in concrete deviated from the linear distribution prior for cracking. Although the analysis predicted the failure load within accepted limits, yet a more rigorous analysis is needed. |
