Abstract

The main object of this thesis is to establish a simple method for the solution of the elastic stability problem of multi-span frames with both prismatic and nonprismatic column members.
A numerical procedure for evaluating the elastic critical load is fully explained in the third chapter. This procedure is based on the numerical method known as the double integration method which was *
first presented in complete form by N. M. Newmatk.(1)
The method is illustrated in details by means of different exam¬ples of single-storey portal frames commonly used for factory buildings. Comparison of results obtained by this method and those obtained by
other well known methods has shown very good agreement.
Also the elastic critical load of three hinged frames is deter¬mined by this method taking into account any possible variation of the raft hinge position.
* Numerals in parentheses refer to corresponding items in the appendix I - References.
Consideration is also given to both three hinged frames and multi-span hinged frames with tapered rectangular columns. The numerical procedure is used to determine the most favorable variation of cross-section of the columns giving the maximum possible elastic critical load for constant column volume.
The method used in this thesis has been organized in a general form and programmed with Fortran language. Two main programmes are developed, one for three hinged frames, the other for multi-span portal frames with both hinged and fixed columns.
