Abstract

Nasal drops, being multidose preparations, are subject to microbial contamination from various sources. Inclusion of effective antimicrobial agents in nasal drops is, therefore, essential. The maintenance of the effectiveness of such agents during the shelf-life and use of the nasal drops is the objective of the microbiological stability and safety of such preparations.
- In the present investigation, 14 nasal drops and sprays commercially available in Egypt, were selected to contain various medicaments intended for bot. infantile and adult administration. The microbiological stability of the selected preparations was assessed by a challenge procedure using 26 test organisms inoculated singly followed by extinction time determinations. Among these organisms, five were standard culture collection type strains; namely : Bacillus Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and hlococcs aureis. The remaining 21 strains were isolated from the nasal cavities of healthy human volunteers .nd nasoharyngeal patients. These isolates have been identified as Gram—negative rods and diplococci and as Gram—positive rods and coccal strains. The latter included 11 Staph. aureus strains which showed different levels o± antibiotic sonsetivity.
The isolated organisms displayed sensitivity patterns towards most o± the assessed nasal drops which were in general, quantitatively lower than those shown by the standard strains.
