Abstract

Soil stabilization may be defined”the process by i,hich the physical and chemical properties 0 , soil and soil-aggregat mixtures may be improved or altered bl, e*.ther mechanical trea¬tment or with the addition of chemicals. One of the primary purposes of stabilization is that ofusing ’ocally available material for sub-base and bases to effect an economical des¬ign of the subgrade-base-pavement combination. In Alexandria,
subgrade failures are frequent under styeU ment in the zone of Smouha and El-Seyouf. The subgrade soil conditions in the a&ricultu the neighbourhood of Alexandria at Smouha, and provinces are similar since both areas were developped by drying a great part of Maruit Lake.In spite of the frequent subgrade and pavement failure in these areas, no attempt has been made to make use of the well-known methods of Soil-Stabilization to develop reliable and economic methods of pavement design and construction. One successful method is the stabilization of such subgrade soils ~7,rith lime to produce a chemical change and a cementing action ’,.’-at will improve the poor properties of 7o
Accordingly, this 4.nvestigation was carried out to deter Lho boni-ficial effects of addition of lime to the heavy(1,1,ayo of the agricultural areas in the neighbourhood of Alexandria at Smouha and El-Syouf.
