Abstract

This thesis presents theoretical and experiT.ental inves¬tigation into the performance and cavitational characteris¬tics pf centrifugal pumps dischargin{” non-Newtonian pseuclplaf)ti fluids •
The theoretical study includes general background concer¬ing types and rheological properties of r)on-New~onian fluids, in addition to the study of flow in the pump suction pIpe, under swirl flow condition, and flow inside the pump casin~.
The rheological properties of the non-Newtonia;l fluids used in the experiments carried out were obtained with ~,lit¬able techni~ues, and are given in the form of curves.

The Net Positive Suction Head of the pump was calculated USlnp; an energitic method.
The study revealed that the pump perforr’1Cince and cavi¬tation (’i]ar;,Cl()ristics depond on the non-Newtonian properties of the fluid.The study also shows that addine; a drag reducing agent with small concentration improves the pump eff~ciency
and its Net Positive Suction head, while the non-Newtonian
Solutions of sm~11 concentrations has a negIegible effect
Performance. The study showed also that the pump
Is independent on the type of fluid, but the specific speed IS sensitive to this type and of fully cavitations is always located at val-use¬
of pressure drop between 5 to 15 % of the operating head
