Abstract This thesis deals with the design and investigation of the steady state performance characteristics of saturistor induction motors, using a new model of saturistor represent ation in cage rotors. A general revision on the previous literature during the last 20 years is presented, and different models of saturistor representation in single frequency equivalent cirauts are also discussed and investigated. A new representation is then introduced which considers the actual magnetic properties of saturistor materials. Also, the fundamental component of magnetizing current is considered to be the component which produces the saturistor loss. As a result, the harmonic currents are ignored in case of single frequency sinusoidal excitation. With this new concept, characteristic, curves of saturistors are obtained., considering the effect of the saturistor volume and air space in its magnetic flux path. A comparison between different representations of saturistors in single frequency equivalent circuits is also included. The work has applied the new model representation to investigate the steady state performance of squirrel cage saturistor induction motors, using the conventional equivalent circuit approach.
