Abstract

The ammonia soda process depends upon.the fact that when a concentrated solution of sodium chloride is satu¬rated with ammonia and carbon dioxide is passed through the mixture , ammonium hydrocarbonate is formed , this then reacts with the sodium chloride, and. sodium hydrogen car¬bonate is precipitated while ammonium chloride re-rains in solution . This process is known as ;’ Solvay Process ”Recently, some investigations were carrieet out for the modification of this process. Some of these investi¬gations introduced minor changes in the process by the addition of small amounts of amines e.g. methylamine , dime¬thylamine, ethylamine, diethylamine, propylamine, iso-pro¬pylamine, butylamine, iso-butylamine, or by the addition of polyphosphates e.g. hexametaphosphate or the addition of polyacrylamide . These additives were added to increase the solubilities of ammonia and sodium chloride in the solu¬tion , they also char-ged the physical properties of sodium bicarbonate precipitated without changing the main process.
Other investigations depended on the partial replace¬ment of ammonia by amines.Complete replacement of ammonia
