Abstract 1-1- Statement of The Problem: Speci fications for primary roads in the Delta Region require the use of strong base material. Crushed lime-stone or silicious aggregates arenormally used• as bases for these roads. Sources for such materi als are found only outside the Delta Region. To the east, they are avai lable in BELBAIS, EL-KHATAMIA and pits in the Eastern Desert along the ISMALIA-CAIRO Highway. EI-HARAM, ALEM EL-MARAB, and EL-KHATATBA are among the places to the west. Huge increase in the cost of hauling base materials, along with the scarcity of new sources of good quality aggregate, have led to progressive increases in the cost of the traditional method of constructing base courses. Previous studies have indicated thepossibility of improving . clay subgrade soils to be suitable for use as a base or subbase for roads. Successful laboratory results have been obtained by.stabil-izing clay soils with lime in relatively small quantities. However the economical feasibility of applying this idea in Egypt has yet to be proved. |
