Abstract

Pain is a prevalent problem among elderly persons. The widespread occurrence of pain among the elderly may be due to the fact that the prevalence of painful and chronic conditions increases with age. Despite of this high prevalence, pain is often under-recognized and commonly under-treated in older adults. Pain is commonly assumed as a normal part of aging, both by the elders and their caregivers. Furthermore, it was found that the majority of the elderly having inappropriately fears of narcotics and its side effects. Untreated chronic pain can impair unnecessarily the health of the elderly person. Mobility may be impaired, disturbed sleep, malnutrition, depression and reduction in social activities may occur.Thus, effective management of pain should be viewed as an urgent geriatric care need. It requires health care providers to be aware of utilizing non-pharmacological pain relief measures which are one component of comprehensive approach to pain relief.So, the aim of this study was to identify the pain coping strategies among the residents of elderly homes in Alexandria.The study was carried out in all six governmental elderly homes in Alexandria (Dar E1 Saada, Dar E1 Hana, Dar E1 Hedaya, Dar E1 Regal, Dar EL Hanan, and Dar Om E1 Nour). The sample was composed of 182 residents aged 60 years and above, suffer from pain either acute or chronic. Each elderly person suffer from pain was interviewed individually to collect the necessary information. Data was collected during a period of 3 months (from the first of March to the end of May 2004). Data was collected using two tools:- Structured interview sheet was used to collect data about.
