Abstract

UI is a prevalent problem among elderly persons. It is judged to be the second leading precipitating cause of institutionalization of the aged. UI is not a result of advancing age, nor is it a disease. It is a symptom of existing environmental, psychological, drug, or physical disturbances and can become a catastrophic event when it interferes with mobility, sociability and the ability to remain in one’s home. The aim of this study was to assess factors related to U ng institutionalized elderlies in Alexandria. The study was carried out in all the six governmental elderly homes in Alexandria. The sample wascomposedof311residentsaged from 55 years and above. The data collection started from May to July 1999. A questionnaire sheet was used to elicit information related to the general characteristics of the elderly, presence of medical problems and medications used, habits of the elderly during day and before sleep, the frequency, types and causes of UI, scale to identify activity of daily living (ADL) and a mini-mental state scale to assess cognitive function of the elderly persons. An observation checklist was also used to assess environmental factors that may lead to UI.The following are the main results: 1. The prevalence of UI among institutionalized elderlies was 34.8%.2. There was a significant correlation between age and occurrence of UI. The old-old (85 years and above) suffer more that the young-old (60-74).3. 11I is almost three times as prevalent in women (74.3%) as compared to men (25.7%).
