Abstract

Aging is associated with many physiological and psychological changes that predispose to the occurrence of several health problems which require medical intervention and can lead to more prescriptions. In spite of the prevalence of chronic diseases that need long term therapy, elderly persons may medicate themselves with over the counter drugs without consulting their physician. This multiple drug use can lead to poor compliance with the prescribed drug regimen. The nurse should be aware Qf the factors affecting Proximal femur fractures Chip fracture) among elderly people have serious consequences in term of disability, mortality, morbidity, longter~n institutional care and social cost. Many factors play a part in determining a person’s risk of falling and fractures. These factors may be Endogenous are factors internal to the individual such as, changes associated with normal aging process e.g. visual irnpairment, postural cllanges, gait balance impairment, disease related system, medical conditi on and medications used. Exogenous or environmental factors include poor lighting, slippery floors, unstable furnitures, objects or barriers in the person’s surrounding sucl^las torn rugs or carpets and absence of grab bars on the walls. As well, the life style of the person seems to affect positively the occurrence of hip fractures. The lack of physical activity, heavy coffee and alcohol consumption, sTnokiTIg arid inadequate phosphours and calcium consumption intake during life play a role for occurrence of hip fractures.
