Abstract

In psychiatric nursing, there is a common belief among mental health professionals that patients with schizophrenia characteristically behave in a withdrawn and preoccupied manner when they are hallucinating. The self management techniques used by patients in this study challenge that belief. The findings of this study suggest that patients with schizophrenia are capable of dealing with auditory hallucinations and that there are differences in the type of self management used, which may vary according to character of the voice heard. The present study aimed at identifying the self management of auditory hallucinations among schizophrenic inpatients. The study was conducted at El-Maamoura Hospital for Psychiatric Medicine in Alexandria; both female and male wards were randomly ranked for inclusion in the study by choosing from a pool. Then a second random ranking was done for male and female wards to determine the order of the wards in which the research will be implemented. Four wards were involved in the process of data collection; two female wards and two male wards. The subjects of the study were 100 schizophrenic patients (50 male patients & 50 female patients) who acknowledge the presence of auditory hallucinations. Patients who refused to participate in the study or with incoherent speech were excluded. The data of this study was obtained using the following tool:Tool I : The phenomenology of auditory hallucinations. The scale measures various parameters of hallucination. It consists of 9 items, each of which is scored from 1 to 3. Mainly,” frequency” ,” duration”,” location”, “reality” (current and past), “sensory intensity”, “overt behavior “, ” causality” and” content( noun and verb) “. The hallucination severity score therefore ranged from 9 to 27. SummaryTool II : The self management of auditory hallucinations.
