Abstract

Loneliness is a complex set of feelings encompassing reactions to the absence of intimate and social needs. The experience of loneliness impacts on individuals across the life spectrum and has physical, psychological and social repercussions. Loneliness has a major influence on psychosocial problems, mental health, and physical well-being. Loneliness also has various causes and effects that can be one and the same, and so it can be confused with similar but different conditions, for example, depression and self-esteem. Another factors or causes for loneliness is not adapt of patients with surrounding environment inside hospital and this asserted by some studies suggested that situational factors such as physical surroundings of the subjects may have a significant effect on the individual’s feelings of loneliness.Accordingly this study aimed to identify factors associated with experience of loneliness among hospitalized psychiatric patients.The study was conducted at El-Maamoura Hospital for Psychiatric Medicine in Alexandria, and the subjects included 300 hospitalized psychiatric patients (192 from free wards, 108 from private wards).Data were collected through the use of aStructured interview schedule of factors associated with loneliness. It includes demographic characteristics and social characteristics and clinical characteristics.
