Abstract

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of wireless nodes [thout any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. It uses
ecial routing protocols, e.g. Ad hoc On Demand Vector (AODV), having the ability to forward the packets in dynamic network topology. The existing routing protocols for ad hoc networks can be divided into insecure and secure protocols. The secure protocols could not address all possible attacks aiming the disruption of the protocolThis thesis studies the effect of two active attacks that target the routing protocols of the MANET. These attacks are the Dropping Routing Traffic and Flooding attacks. A Real-time Host Intrusion Detection for Ad hoc Networks (REHIDAN) is proposed to identify the active attacks and take the appropriate countermeasures to minimize the effect of the attack and maintain the network performance within the accepted limits.
The two attacks and the proposed REHIDAN algorithm are applied to an AODV-enabled Ad hoc Network Model. They are simulated using the Optimized Network Engineering Tools (OPNET). The performance of the ad hoc network model is tested using the Average End-to-End (ETE) delay, and Average Routing Overhead Ratio. The effect of the two attacks, the effect of applying the proposed REHIDAN and the effect of the speed of the mobile nodes are studied. The results show that the REHIDAN minimizes the effect of the attacks and improves the ETE delay and the routing overhead ratio.
