Man lives within an integral relationship with the surroundings. But, in many times, the environment loses the ability to assimilate man’s ambitions and aspirations. This is where the flaw of this relationship comes. In architecture, with the rapid development of functions, the change of types - leading to inability of buildings to assimilate those changes, especially that the building’s span life is longer than its functional life-this led to the rise of intellectual trends of the basics and approaches of dealing with these developments. Of these is the notion of buildings reuse, as these trends and notions were identified in three approaches: the functional approach - the cultural approach - the environmental approach. The approaches represent the intellectual references within buildings reuse. The research aims at studying the trends, concepts, and theoretical notions of reuse; and the development of its stages till they are identified the three approaches.
The research aims to study the different concepts of buildings reuse and the potentials of applying these concepts, whether on existing buildings or in the design process.
