Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the role of Helicobacter pylori in infant and children with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
This study was conducted on (30) pediatric patients with hematemesis and or melena who were treated at Zagazig University, faculty of medicine, department of pediatrics, gastroenterology and endoscopy unit in the period from August 2005 to August 2007 , undergoing upper endoscopy as part of evaluation and diagnosis of causes of their upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
Resutts : H. pylori infection was detected in 8 out of 30 patients accounting for 26.7% of cases. The proportion of H. pylori +ve patients was found to be higher as patients’ age advanced. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy of patients with upper GI bleeding showed that the most commonly detected abnormalities were superficial gastritis (33.3%), esophagitis (26.6%) ,esophageal varices (23.3%), duodenal ulcer (10%), gastric ulcer (3.3%) and duodenitis (3.3%). upper gastrointestinal endoscopy of H. pylori +ve patients showed that the most commonly detected abnormality were duodenal ulcer (100%) , gastic ulcers ( 100%), esophageal varices (42.9%) and esophagitis (12.5%).
