Abstract Tigris generally flows in a southeasterly direction through the mountains of turkey and plains of iraq, and gradually converges on the Euphrates until these two rivers join at Qurna. The whole length of Tigris reaohes about 1.950 km, and its length within iraq is about 1.360 km. the catchment area of this river basin reaches about 166.155 km2. within iraq, the prinoipal tributaries of Tigris are ; the greater zab, the lesser zab, the adhaim and the diyalah rivers. The present study, which can be considered as the first more or less detailed limnological investigation on Tigris, deals with the seasonal variations of the chemico-physical characteristics and the phytoplankton blooms in the lowers stretch of Tigris (630 km) from salman pak near Baghdad to the mouth in shatt al-Arab at Qurna. |
