The present work attempts to develop a new plan to expand the Egyptian mercantile fleet.
The existing commercial fleet is incapable of playing an effective role in carrying such responsibility for shouldering the future needs of the ever expanding trade. Besides the political and social benefits of having an upto date commercial fleet, the economic value .of such a fleet could not be ignored. It is hypothesized that should the fleet be expanded according to outline proposed in this study , the fleet could finance itself as well as have a handsome return needed for economic growth.
During the last decade, impressive changes in global industrial production and international trade have been observed, not to mention in international transport as well. These changes have decisively influenced the global system of container shipping transport. The international trade transport and port activities have great emphasis on containerization and its requirements (container ships, terminals and modes of transport) which are considered the back bone of the Multimodal Transport System.
During the last decade Egyptian ports showed a strong increase in container throughput. Transshipment has started in 1990 and quickly increased, Total Egyptian container throughput has increased by an annual average of 22 percent for the last 16 years.
These impressive growth figures have emerged in changing Egyptian container market environment. Opening up of the previously inward oriented port sector, combined with an increased confidence in container transport and an increased participation of the private sector have contributed to the large volume growth.
The Multimodal Transport System realized the need for reforming the structure of the Egyptian mercantile fleet and at the same time for utilizing the advantage of the geographical location of
EGYPT.
By its very nature, an efficient Multimodal Transport System has been proposed to be applied in Egypt based on a techno — economical study.
The technical side of the study involves the following
-The unsatisfactory state of affairs of the existing fleet.
-The optimum type, size and speed of the ships needed to fill in the gap between the present and the required fleet.
