Abstract

This study has demonstrated that a high degree of variability occurs in the bean, phaseolus vulgaris, rust pathogen, uromyces appendiculatus,in Egypt ,Honduras, and south Africa and has isolated and described 20 previously undescribed pathogenic races of this rust fungus.
The degree of variability identified here indicates U.appendiculatus probably has as high a degree of variability in Egypt, south Africa and Honduras as has already been identified in Brazil and the United States.
Six of the seven Egyptian races produced moderately susceptible or fully susceptible uredinia, type 0.5-0.8 mm and larger than 0.8 mm diameter, respectively,on bush snap bean cultivars Early Gallatin and Brown Beauty.
Race 91 produced only a resistant necrotic reaction with very small uredinia, on these two cultivars.
