Abstract

Phytoremediation is an emerging technology that is potentially effective and applicable to a number of different contaminants and site conditions. At this stage, additional experience and information is needed to consolidate phytoremediation into a decision matrix or cost model. In the hope of finding metal hyperaccumulators under desert-type conditions soil samples were collected at various sites in Egypt. Soils contained high levels of metals. The plant species collected at the sites exhibited different concentrations in metals, but there was no direct relationship between the concentration in plant and concentration in soil. The plants collected during this work represented the most frequent plant species encountered on the sites. Since the sampling was conducted randomly, it was not possible to have an exhaustive view of the sites and more work should be done to complete this first investigation in Egypt.
