المستخلص

Articular cartilage is the thin layer of deformable, load-bearing material that lines the bony ends of all diarthrodial joints.
The primary functions of this tissue are to support and distribute forces generated during joint loading and to provide a lubricating surface to prevent wear or degradation of the joint.
Articular cartilage defect is common and varied in its aetiology from traumatic to non traumatic causes.
Several classifications had been proposed for articular cartilage defect the most recent is inter national cartilage repair society classification.
The management of articular cartilage defect is difficult as the capacity of repair is poor many strategies have been proposed to repair these lesions by restoring the joint surface and improving patients’ symptoms of these strategies is autologus chondrocytes transplantation in which the defect is treated by implanting the patient’s own chondrocytes that had been expanded in vitro into the defect in combination with a covering mechanical membrane- the periosteum Generally satisfactory results of Autologus chondrocyte transplantation range from 70% up to 90% .
Autologus chondrocyte transplantation is suitable for post traumatic large defect size lesion about 6cm square in younger individuals less than 35 years old.
