Abstract
The purpose of this study is to further define the benefits of CO2 laser excision in the larynx, ear and oral cavity. Our research work will include one hundred cases of oto-rhino-laryngology operated upon by CO2 laser in the department of head and neck surgery, university of Tennessee within one year period (from April 1993 to April 1994).
The research will be concentrated upon the advantages and disadvantages of laser usage introperatively and functional results and complications one and six months postoperatively.
Conclusions:
This study concluded that CO2 laser adds a dimension in instrumentation which reduces trauma, increases accuracy, and makes microsurgery easier to perform. As one’s experience and familiarities with the instrument increases, the situations in which the laser is selected as the tool of choice will increase. Although the size of our sample is small and with short term follow up, hopefully this study will stimulate other investigators with large series to report long term results in order to verify this conclusion.
