Abstract

Aim of the work
To determine the growth hormone and growth parameters in chronic asthmatic children.
Summary and conclusion
In our study 53 children (35 asthmatic patient not receiving corticosteroid and 18 healthy children as control) were studied for several growth parameters including chronologiocal age, height, and bone age and serum growth hormone.
There was as highly significantly lowered (P<0.0005) mean height; bone age and serum growth hormone of asthmatic patients than controls.
The effect was more marked in asthmatic patients below 10 years, where mean height bone age, and serum growth hormone of patients were highly significantly lowered (P<0.0001) than normal control.
When comparing asthmatic children above 10 years with their age matched control group we found that the height and bone age of asthmatics were significantly lowered (P<0.01) while the GH level was insignificantly affected.
There was no significant difference (P<0.05) between growth hormone levels of asthmatic patients with illness duration up to 3 years and with duration more than 3 years.
We could conclude that the height, bone age and serum growth hormone levels are affected by chronic bronchial asthma and the retarding effect is more marked in the young aged patients than older, but once puberty began complete catch up growth may result in the attainment of adult height.
