Abstract The aim of this study was the early detection and assessment of neonatal problems due to perinatal asphyxia, by clinical, laboratory and neuroimaging studies in order to interfere as early as possible to decrease neonatal morbidity and mortality. The final outcome of the study at the age of 1 year was as follows: 1- Good outcome with average mental and motor development for 17 of the 50 patients (34%). 2- Ten children (20%) died within the one year follow-up period of the study, 4 of them died in their first week of life. 3- CP with epilepsy for 6 (12%) of the newborns, and another 4 (8%) had CP without epilepsy. 4- Epilepsy in 4 (8%) children (without concomitant CP). 5- Delayed motor development in 5 (10%) children. 6- Delayed mental development in 4 (8%) children. 7- Delayed mental development in 4 (8%) children. The morbidity and mortality in infants with PA was not only due to CNS affection, but also due to renal, cardiac, pulmonary or haematological dysfunction. |
