Abstract __________ The present thesis consists of eight chapters: Chapter 1 This chapter includes a general introduction on the selected antimicrobial agents concerning their structures, physical properties, pharmaceutical preparations, pharmacological actions, uses and literature review. Chapter 2 In this chapter, three antimicrobial agents lomefloxacin hydro chloride, benzalkonium chloride and cetylpyridinium chloride have been determined in their pharmaceutical preparations, by the reaction with mercuric thiocyanate-iron(III) reagent. The chloride ions react with mercuric thiocyanate where equivalent number of thiocyanate ions are liberated. The free thiocyanate ions react with iron(III) in acidic medium to produce a blood red ferric thiocyanate complex. The produced red complex was measured spectrophotometrically at 462 nm for lomefloxacin hydrochloride and 464 nm for benzalkonium chloride and cetylpyridinium chloride over the concentration ranges of 19-152 g/ml, 17.5-140 pg/mI and 17-119 pg/mI for the three drugs, respectively. Chapter 3 Two spectrophotometric methods have been described for the assay of levofloxacin, lomefloxacin hydrochloride and enoxacin in their dosage forms depending on their basic properties. The first method depends on the charge-transfer complex formation reaction between the drugs and DDQ. The second one is based on the formation of ion pairs between the drugs and BCP. The concentration ranges covered in this chapter are 30-120 tgIm1, 20-80 .tg/ml and 25-90 tg/ml in the DDQ |
