Abstract Aim of the work The present study adopts a multidescriptive approach causing neurological, neuropsychological. As well as neurophysiological tools to investigate the impact of malnutrition on neuron development in school children in a rural area in EL-Minia governorate. Conclusions Analyses of the data obtained from this study have shown the following: 1- Increased prevalence of soft neurological signs among the malnourished compared to the well nourished children. 2- Malnourished children also showed lower levels of intelligence and language comprehension than the well nourished children, while visual perception clarified non significant difference between the two groups. 3- Increased prevalence of E.E.G. abnormalities among the malnourished children in the form of excessive the activity and focal epileptic changes mostly in the temporal lobe. In conclusion, these results may indicate that malnutrition affects grossly C.N.S. maturation and cognitive functions in children. However, further follow up studies are recommended to assess the possible role of nutritional rehabilitation on progression of these abnormalities. |
