Abstract Aim of the work To determine iron stores in patients of chronic renal failure, on regular haemodialysis and to find out if there is an element of iron deficiency in these patients or not. Conclusion Patients of chronic renal failure under regular haemodialysis and microcytic hypochromic anemia. Iron stores of chronic renal failure patients are depleted as there is significant decrease of serum iron and ferritin in these patients comparable to the control group. Recommendations 1- To compensate iron stores in these patients by either oral or I.V. iron supplements. 2- Serum ferritin should be determined before subscribing iron to these patients for fear of iron overload. 3- Correction of erythropoietin deficiency by prescribing recombinant human erythropoietin for these patients after correction of iron stores deficiency so by this we can improve perfectly the anemia of chronic renal failure and its complications in these patients. |
